I remember a large grey portable computer from the 80's that was a very
rare contraption. I know a guy who had one but I don't remember the
name. Any ideas?

The Newton was more of Palm like organizer, it may have just been
slightly ahead of it's time. I think they had some problems with
handwriting recognition and they were thicker than the the Palm
products, making them more of a briefcase portable rather than a
shirt pocket one. They were discontinued in the late 90s a couple of
years later everyone was selling those devices.
