Karen,
Hard as it is to believe right now, tracking will become second nature before you know it. Also in case nobody mentioned it, to fully charge an optacon with a run-down battery takes about 14 hours. If the machine has not been used in some time, it's most likely that the battery does need replacement.
When you are ready to practice tracking you might want to use an ink printer to print out a few pages of simple characters. For example, on one page, print a line of hyphens near the top, another line of hyphens in the middle, and a third line of hyphens near the bottom. Practice locating all three lines. Then practice keeping the line of hyphens in the middle of the array (the place where you put your finger). When you have more or less mastered that, you can move on to other things. Another page could contain 26 rows, each row containing a letter of the alphabet. Again, you'll practice locating the rows and following them across.
