Karen,
The slide switch on the camera is the zoom button. Generally, you move it
near the upper end for reading most average size printed letters, say 8
point or 6 point. If the printing is too large, move the button toward the
base of the camera.
By the way, the retina cable attaches to the camera with the wire in the six
o-clock position. You can invert this, putting the wire at 12 o'clock if
you need to read something backward such as reading oprint that would be
upside down.
The switch in the back of the optacon is an inverse switch for reading light
print on a dark background. Good for reading white letters on a dark
background, as found in some instructions or on sume labels on the splines
of some CD's.
The two knobs are as follows:
The top knob is an intensity knob. It increases the intensity at which the
reeds vibrate. I generally keep mine near the maximum position..
The bottom switch is a threshhold adjustment. For black-on-white, normal
print, putting this at around 9 o'clock is good. If you advance it too
far, the pins will vibrate all the time. When you use the invert switch on
the back of the optacon for reading white on black, you'll need to turn the
threshhold knob to stop the vibrations as you are now reading inverse print.
The button inside near the array is a reset switch.
There is also a button near the power jack. If the pins are vibrating,
pressing this button gives you an indication of battery charge level. The
pitch of the pin vibration should stay the same or slightly increase when
the button is pressed. If the pitch drops, it means your battery voltage is
dropping, meaning the batteries are discharged.
