Would you believe, a pound of salt. A 40% error rate would make the document unreadable--well, almost. While I love my opticon, I certainly would scream bloody murder were my k1000 or scanner to quit working and would take steps to fix the problem immediately. With the amount of reading I did while travelling, the new reader would have been most useful and, were it not for the still more flexible opticon and my present k1000, I would certainly consider at least the next major release of this exciting product. Doug: Wonder if there's software that would recognize me! I wouldn't take an anecdotal unsubstantiated statistic like that with anything more than a grain of salt. There were no sorts of control conditions, or suite of documents on which this number out of the air was taken. Learning to maintain a focal length distance, and compensate for ambient lighting conditions isn't intuitive, or non trivial in terms of requisite patience and practice, especially considering the universe of print against which one is also placing their ability to handle the afore mentioned variables.
