On the Virginia class boats, the VSL tubes are up front, directly behind the
main sonar sphere array and ahead of the torpedoes. The next generation of
submarines are evaluating modular, externally mounted torpedoes. We made
some funky underwater propellant for the DARPA/ONR advanced submarine
program to launch them.

No, on many modern subs (and all of the USN ones, I think) the nose is full
of honking big sonar transducers, so the torpedo tubes (and torpedo
storage) had to be moved farther aft; the tubes are angled out. This is not
ideal but the sonar systems have priority.
