As Robert Steinke said, the "constant volume" part is the burning: the
detonation wave sweeps through so fast that the gas can't expand in
the process, so you don't have to confine it mechanically.
I'm guessing the detonation mechanism somehow uses more available
energy for molecular translation and less going into molecular
rotation? I'm curious to understand the mechanism.
In what we've been discussing, at least, we haven't been contemplating
any difference on a molecular level between detonation combustion and
ordinary combustion. Even if there were some difference at the very
first, it'd rapidly decay towards thermal equilibrium as it passed
through the engine towards the nozzle.
