I always get confused by the terminology lean and rich...  So when I say 1.3:1
I'm referring to the O/F ratio. In other words 1.3 times more oxidizer mass
flow then fuel. If I run the main engine at about 1:1 O/F then the hot gas temp
will be somewhat lower.

Wouldn't running the main engine leaner (1:1 instead of 1.3:1) result in more
heat, not less? I thought running fuel rich was a way to reduce temperatures,
not the other way around.
