In fairness, the Allies *did* have jet fighters in operational service
well before the end of the war -- it's just that they were shooting down
V-1s over England rather than tangling with Me262s over Germany. (Early
jet fighters were best suited to defensive roles, because early jet
engines were terrible fuel hogs and that made for rather limited combat
radius and endurance.)
