Unfortunately, for rockets it's unappealing to use large amounts of
something inert (or even something that's a moderately good fuel, like
acetone) to pacify the acetylene -- the added mass makes the resulting
numbers unimpressive.
Pacifying it with the oxidizer -- which has to be there anyway -- wasn't
entirely insane, given a pretty stable oxidizer that gave a very skewed
mixture ratio. Alas, it wasn't quite stable enough.
