There is such a thing as going too far in that direction, though.
Copenhagen Suborbitals under Peter Madsen's leadership struck me as an
example of that: lots of showy firsts, little follow-through /
debugging / iterative improvement.
And if some student actually does have the inner drive to (say) putter
around for years trying to make a turbopump, it seems wrong to tell
him not to -- though admittedly anyone with that sort of drive will
probably ignore our opinions as to what he should do, so no harm done.
