Rachael and Mike,
The reasons why a lot of people could not master the optacon are not
unknown at all. 1. Some people were evaluated for Optacon training and
deemed incapable without ever really having the chance to try. 2. Many
were discouraged by the hard work needed t learn tracking, threshold
adjustment, and symbol recognition. 3. Many people lost heart whenthey
discovered that the neat and tidy pages they had een given in training did
not resemble what they were faced with when reading mail and other print
material. 4. Many people were discouraged when they found out how slowly
the optacon reads. TeleSensory had convinced a lot of people that they
could do away with sighted assistance and other reading devices if they
used an optacon. A "slight" exaggeration.
I'msure others onthis list can add more to the known reasons why many
people did not master the optacon aside from the original purchase price
and the need for intense training.
