The Sonic Guide was purely audible, and it was also stereo. It had
earmolds designed to pipe the sound from the device into your ears while
letting in environmental sounds. The Sonic Guide was a pair of glasses
with a triangle of audio transducers mounted in the center between the
lenses. The transmitting transducer was in the center, and the two
receiving transducers were set off to each side slightly to give the
stereo effect. I won't go too deep into the details of the theory of
producing the sound, but what the user would hear were tones signifying
objects in the Sonic Guide's path, and the frequency of the sound would
move downward as the object got closer. The volume of the sound was
dependent on a combination of the distance away of the object and, I
believe, how sound absorbent the object was. In practice you would get
sort of a whooshing noise from something complicated like a tree and a
more solid tone from something hard and well-defined like an unadorned
wall.

Jerry,
I had similar experiences with the Mowat sensor as you did with the Sonic
guide; I can't recall seeing a Sonic guide though; was it more audible
than
tactile? I had training with the Mowat from an instructor who came to my
work place; we worked in the large plaza, which was surrounded by eight
buildings that had windows looking out on it, so we had quite an audience
of
people who approached me after the training sessions and asked tons of
questions about what in the world was going on. It was spring at the time
and I suspect they really wanted to be outside as we were. I think they
really got curious when I was learning how to navigate bewteen and around
trees and other objects.
