Hi Don,

I am new to this list.

When I was in high school, I was trained to use the Optacon but it did not go any further after that.

I wish very badly, that my teacher had encouraged my parents or rehab counselor to pursue getting me one.

I could truly use one at this juncture in my life.

It is my understanding that Optacons are no longer manufactured.

Could you tell me if there are places, internet or otherwise, if and/or where they are sold?

I would appreciate any one's help or advice.

Thanks very much.

Cathy

Hi Becky,

I had the exact thing happen to my r1d and it was indeed a dead battery. It simply got to the point that even the AC adapter couldn't hold it up and I did
have to replace the battery.

I don't know where you're located, but you might want to consider contacting Richard Oehm of Oehm Electronics. His company does replace batteries and
his prices are reasonable. Also, he is quite prompt in getting the unit fixed and back to you.

You can call him at: (408)971-6250 for more details.

Hello Listers:

I use an Optacon R1D. The battery won't hold its charge, so I have the Ac
adapter plugged in most of the time.

I was away for 2 weeks and had the adapter unplugged. The battery was
completely discharged, so I plugged in the adapter. Even after 20 hours of
charging and with the AC adapter plugged in, I'm not able to read anything.
The battery tester gives a very low tone. In invert mode, I get
vibrations of the full array.

Do I have to replace the battery? I'd appreciate any advice.
