I had the exact thing happen to my r1d and it was indeed a dead battery.
It simply got to the point that even the AC adapter couldn't hold it up
and I did
have to replace the battery.
I don't know where you're located, but you might want to consider
contacting Richard Oehm of Oehm Electronics. His company does replace
batteries and
his prices are reasonable. Also, he is quite prompt in getting the unit
fixed and back to you.
