I have also removed a label here and there on a bottle of medicine; I have
also slid the label off a skane or cone of my wife's yarn when she has
forgotten the yarn's color. I do, however, see the possibility of a "cloud"
coming upon us regarding labels of certain meds: With the opioid crisis
coming to the fore of late, I envision the likelihood of more drug
manufacturers making their labels so that they will be almost impossible to
remove without frazzling them to pieces beyond our readability with our old
faithful Optacons. I have already encountered one or two cases in which I
could not remove a label cleanly. Fortunately for me in these cases, I was
trying to "de-label" a pill bottle for my use in holding screws or other
small parts when I am disassembling an item for repair or troubleshooting.
It happens that I don't want to "advertise" the fact that I might be taking
a certain med, but I want the convenience of "recycling" one of those
bottles for my "tinkering workbench." We all know, of course, that if we
handle a particular print item repeatedly, we come to know its format; that
knowledge often makes it far easier to go directly to the point of interest,
whereas an automated reader might have to read several seconds to get down
to the place we want. If you often get a certain type of envelope in the
mail, you probably recognize its identity by touch; and you often know
immediately where to put that camera to read what you want on it. Frankly,
I think that children, especially totally-blind children - now get "cheated"
because they don't learn early on the exposure to printed material we get
with the Optacon. I also believe that a side benefit to Optacon training
and usage is an improvement in small-movement manual dexterity; and blind
kids miss this benefit, too.

I also sometimes remove the label from a round thing in order to flatten it
to make it easier to read.
If you have an actual box of tablets and one of the strips has fallen out
and you are not sure which box it belongs to, you can read the back of the
strip which contains the name of the tablets.
