Yes, the crochet patterns always have written directions, even instructions
about yarn size, hook size, how many stitches should be in an inch, in addition
to the graphics.

I have used my Optacon a lot to read charted knitting patterns, yes it is
time-consuming but definitely doable. When my nephews were little, I made
several sweaters with pictures on them and was very successful. Some knitting
patterns have the chart, but they also include written directions.

What you are talking about is diagrams, and you want to stick with the patterns
that will give you the text you need. You can definitely read these with an
optacon, but recently I have gotten my patterns online with plenty of text
instruction. That may be a quicker way to go, unless you have that special
pattern in hard-copy only.

Subject: [optacon-l] A Question about reading knitting patterns
Hello everyone,
First, I want to tell you that I'm so pleased to have my optaCon !
repaired and back home. I'm thinking what book to start with.
second, I wonder if anyone has any experience with reading knitting
patterns
or their drawings. Sorry, I don't know the correct English word for these.
Could I take advantage of these drawings with OptaCon? Of course, I
can't see colours, since I'm totally blind. It is my belief that
colours play a role in these drawings.
Thanks, and happy summer to all!
Best wishes,
Marianne
