Eric, English language learners really find homophones no less or more troublesome than native English speakers. A difficult language is one whose nouns are either male, female, or neuter. One must know the gender of a noun to avoid being laughed at. That, in itself, is not a difficulty if one doesn't bruise easily. However, a female noun, for instance, demands that its modifiers have female endings. A sentence, whose subject is female and its modifiers have male endings can cause embarrassing misunderstandings.
