Hi Cindy,

I would guess the reason is because when Word first was released, RTF was its native format. This is of course why RTF is not as standard across platforms as it once was. Anything Microsoft touches, they seem as though they have to muck about with it.
A guess regarding their DOC format would be, that when MS was either unable to cajole, or bully, the standards committee into incorporating more changes to the RTF format, they went their own way with DOC using RTF as a boiler plate.
