My guess is that Google Desktop is opening a sidebar in IE which you might
be able to turn off by going through the Google Desktop options. If
possible, I would strongly advise you to at least update JAWS to 7.1 from
7.0. It's a free update from what I recall.

Allison, is it possible that installation of Google desktop derailed file
association for HTML files? If you decide to install Google Desktop once
more, select a Bookshare html file, press shift-F10, and try to reassign
the default program to render these files to IE. I'll try to install Google
Desktop as well and will post results. Guido

[bksvol-discuss] Google Desktop Broke my Bookshare Books

Hi everyone,

At the Bookshare users meeting last Tuesday, many individuals suggested that
I try Google Desktop. I thought it sounded interesting, so I downloaded it.

I frequently read the HTML Bookshare files when I want to read a book.
After installing Google Desktop, I found that I couldn't directly open my
Bookshare HTML files. When I clicked on an HTML file in My Computer, it
would take me directly to the Google search page instead of the book text.
The same thing happened when I tried to open the XML file. This happened
with a few different books too. I tried for a long time to figure out how
in the world I would be able to read my HTML Bookshare files and couldn't
think up a solution. So I uninstalled the Google Desktop application. When
I did, my XML files read, but my HTML files still didn't open and I really
wish they did because I like reading that way. So, if anyone has a
suggestion as to how I can keep Google from breaking my Bookshare files, I'd
appreciate it. BTW, I'm using JFW version 7.0.

After a lot of trial and error, I discovered that I could read my HTML files
by pressing control tab from the Google search page. Thanks to this, I can
now read my HTML Bookshare books. However, I'd really prefer to not have to
do the control tab at all. I really want my book to open up right away as
it used to. I don't know how to fix that. As I said, I've already
uninstalled the Google Desktop so can't figure out why Google still has a
hold over my computer. I looked in my add and remove programs box and there
are no Google components left on my system, and yet somehow it appears that
there is something left from that program.

I wrote this message for two reasons. 1. I'm hoping that someone can help
me figure out how to fix my HTML files. 2. It's important for us all to
realize that, while some new programs may look fun and easy to us, there are
plenty of other users who won't find them half so intuitive. This doesn't
mean that Bookshare shouldn't develop new applications, it just means that
not everyone has the same level of tech skills and it's important to keep
that in mind.

Best,
Allison
