Actually, in the seventies, after Telesensory was established, a one handed
Optacon was designed at Stanford. Some testing was done of the idea. At
the time to build a product from this design required a significant
development in integrated circuits and packaging which was beyond
Telesensory's resources. The possibilities for government funding didn't
look promising and neither did private funding.

Another consideration was that a major part of the Optacon market was state
departments of rehabilitation, that justified Optacon purchase based on
whether it was needed in employment. The Optacon lens attachments (e.g.,
typing attachment, CRT attachment, etc.) were critical to this market. We
didn't see a way to make these attachments work with thid one-handed Optacon
design.

An unanswered question is whether reading rates would be faster or slower
with a one-handed Optacon. Some experiments at Stanford suggested that it
might be faster, but these experiments were not definitive.
