Unless I'm missing something, why would someone want something like the P2RD if it only speaks? That's what we get with our scanners and OpenBook/Kurzweil programs. The beauty of the Optacon is that you can feel the image for yourself and determine what it is - something that scanners can't obviously let you do. I often look at pages with my Optacon that my scanner makes a mess of, and I can often figure out why the scanner won't read them. The P2RD, from my understanding, is kind of like a portable scanner, which is nice, but doesn't have the same functionality of the Optacon. Also, if you're going to have to scan the page with a hand-held camera, that's already been done with the Kurzweil Personal Reader. I don't know how successful it was; I just know it's been done already. I'd like to see something that talks, provides Braille output, and also a tactile image. That way you can choose which type of output you want. Also, has anyone heard of the VideoTIM, another Optacon-like device? The NFB's technology center apparently has one on display. From the description of it, I'd love to see it.
