Jim and list members, Jim, thank you very much for the extensive draft of a new Optacon design. Hopefully it will inspire some engineers to get involved and comment in the spirit of an open source discussion. As I recall, one of the definitive technical documents is a final report for the 5-year project at Stanford to develop the Optacon under a grant from a federal agency. According to my archived notes, it's a 70-plus page document that includes abstracts of theses prepared by Linvill's students along with references to many engineering papers directly related to the Optacon. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to this report. Maybe you can locate a copy? For any engineer that is seriously interested in the design of a new Optacon it's a "must read" document. This may be the information describing the document: Subject: Research and Development of Tactile Facsimile Reading Aid for the Blind (The Optacon). Final Report. Authors: Linvill, John G. Date: 1973-03-00 Institution: Stanford Univ., CA. Stanford Electronics Labs. Grant agency: Bureau of Education for the Handicapped (DHEW/OE), Washington, DC. It will be in the public domain, but it could take some work to retrieve it. FWIW, Keith PS. I'll try to find time this evening to give you some feedback on the draft. ----- Original Message ---- From: Jim Bliss <jamescbliss@xxxxxxxxx> To: optacon-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, January 26, 2009 11:43:24 AM Subject: [optacon-l] Re: Optacon article from January 2009 Braille Forum Mary, Thanks for sending the Optacon article. It inspired me to write the following draft of new Optacon ideas. I would be interested in any feedback from the Listserv. Jim Bliss *New Optacon Design Ideas* *by James C.
