I was just thinking about this, some of the people I grew up with had
families who did not really encourage them to be independent, who seemed
to place all kinds of limitations on their abilities as young children.
These same people seem to have more trouble with travel and
conceptualizations of things they cannot touch than those whose parents
more or less treated them like any other child and encouraged them to
explore their world.

Hello Beth. I have R.O.P. (born at 5.5 months), and I had trouble with
spatial relationships for some of my childhood. But, I did eventually
overcome this, and good senses helped: facial vision, hearing,
kinaesthetics, touch, etc. I became a good o&m traveller, and also a
versatile optacon user if not a good one. I found that the more I
explored the three-dimensional world and visualized it (I had very good
opportunities as a child), the more visual things made intiutive sense.
The optacon fit right in there.
