Well, I know Jerry's needs the battery, because it doesn't even work on the power cord, anymore. Mine could be a retina problem. Richard fixed the retina, one time, and said he didn't know how long it would hold. It's been at least a couple years. But, it might need some work, now. Been there, done that. I've had optacons that didn't focus, and they've always needed battery replacements. I vaguely recall reading on this list about how the battery is used even when the machine is plugged in. I never use the batteries and I still need replacements occasionally. Go figure.
