Well, I know Jerry's needs the battery, because it doesn't even work on the 
power cord, anymore.  Mine could be a retina problem.  Richard fixed the 
retina, one time, and said he didn't know how long it would hold.  It's been 
at least a couple years.  But, it might need some work, now.

Your optacon's not focusing sounds very familiar. Been there, done that.
I've had optacons that didn't focus, and they've always needed battery
replacements. I vaguely recall reading on this list about how the battery is
used even when the machine is plugged in. I never use the batteries and I
still need replacements occasionally. Go figure.
