Technically there were actually TWO 12" G3 PowerBooks; namely, the PowerBook G3 "Kanga" and the PowerBook G3 Series "Wallstreet"["Main Street"] (it might have been the "Main Street"?). But, only one of them can be considered a G3 (the Wallstreet) since the PowerBook G3 could not run Mac OS X. And, yes, the first of the PowerBook G3 Series was a pitiful underperformer (see the URL kindly provided by Chris). The subsequent G3s all had larger screens and were faster. That said, I would recommend for the PowerBook G3 "Lombard" or newer. They simply provided that much more oemph (especially the Pismo... it's a tragedy Apple never designed a G4 in its form factor (even though the early G4s were nothing more than a glorified Pismo)).
