I don't know for sure but...

I suspect a few factors are at play... better/larger (not necessarily the
same ;) selection, inflation (which we all forget when we like to grumble)
and larger market (seems strange... larger market = higher prices (at least,
in my experience)).

What I'm think of in terms of being hosed by the Ma Bell !@#$!@#)(* is
paying $0.39/min prime time long distance in 1990, whereas now the cost is
down to $0.07 or $0.10 (whatever plan you happen to be on). Technology has
changed but that is not the primary reason for the cost drop -- competition
has and that demonstrates that Ma Bell as a monopoly was not acting as a
decent corporate citizen. Further, I've always had *horrible* experience
with Ma Bell's support (& I've been personally dealing with those a$$holes
since 1994).

Anyway, Rogers is no friend of mine either (except for they never hosed me
the way Bell used to) -- their corporate behaviour is as repugnant as that
of Bell (negative billing & monopolistic practices come to mind (it's not
like Bell not-so-High Speed Edition is real competition and good luck trying
to get another cable co. to come in... they (Rogers, Shaw, Cogeco (?)) all
have their local monopolies).

Eric.
