I have the Canon EOS digital.  It takes great pictures, but I wouldn't 
recommend it for anyone with not much camera experience. There are too many 
options. Even the point and shoot option has too many options. Also, the 
basic lens it comes with does not have enough zoom.

I don't think you'd have to spend anywhere near $500 for what you are 
looking for. I bought my daughter and my parents a "cheapy" for under $100 
during one of the Christmas specials; I can't even remember the brand now --  
Kodak? Maybe. But, even my mom and dad can use it with not too many 
problems. They are 80 years old. Mom

One thing I did not pay attention to is that most of the point and shoot 
cameras only have a screen for a view finder; there is no eye view finder. 
While this makes the screen larger, it's also annoying, especially in bright 
sonlight when the screen is hard to see.
