Hi all,
I got to see a BrailleNote Touch this week and am considering
getting one, but I still have some questions that I'd love to get
help with here. In general, I'd love to hear from those of you
using the Touch about how you like it as compared to the Apex,
but here are some specific things I'm wondering about
1. How easy or challenging was the adjustment from the Apex to
the Touch?
AP> <smiling> this is several questions at one time. I found it
fairly easy to make the transition to the touch. The planner and the
Address list have formats which are slightly different than those on
the Apex, but it is not a difficult transition.
LS> Were you able to perform basic tasks like writing documents,
checking email, using the internet, etc, fairly
quickly?
AP> Yes, I think I transitioned rather well with the basics. That's
because it's still Keysoft.
LS> Were there things that took a while to learn/feel
comfortable with on the Touch?
AP> I had some difficulty with the touch Braille. I kept wanting to
curve my fingers like you do when you type on a regular keyboard, or
piano. I found that once I took Kim Loftis at her word and quit
curving my fingers, I didn't have the problem of writing an e and
having my ring finger on my right hand plunking down, giving me a wh.
I believe that with practice, touch Braille will become easier. So,
what I did initially was to use the keyboard to set the thing up and to
do things I felt to be important. I practiced by writing some test
documents and that really seemed to help.
LS> > 2. How stable is the Touch compared to the Apex in terms of how
often it crashes, how often it needs to be reset, etc?
AP> The unit I worked with didn't need any rebooting.
LS> > 3. Is there anything the Apex can do that the Touch can't?
AP> Right now, the Touch can't read .txt files very well, and you need
to use the Braille Reader to read .brf files. It's a bit clunky that
way. I believe that's going to change.
LS> > 4. I know the Touch can't connect to an iPhone. Do we think
this might change, or is it just unnecessary given the Touch's
capabilities?
AP> I believe that having the ability to connect to an iPhone or Smart
Phone is in the offing.
LS> > 5. Is the internet faster/more accessible on the Touch than it
is on the Apex?
AP> Yes, though I tried Chrome and couldn't get anywhere. But the
Keysoft web stuff is good.
LS> > 6. I saw that the Touch has a camera. Does it have OCR
capabilities?
AP> Not yet, though this is in the offing too, I understand.
LS>> 7. Any other pros/cons/things to be aware of as I consider
upgrading from the Apex to the Touch?
AP> I think I've pretty well covered the waterfront at least from my
experience. Good luck and when you get your Touch you can tell us how
you like it.
