That's a good question. I'm not sure what fine reader, or any other scanning
software, would do with mathematical symbols, but, once done, what is the
reading software such as Kurzweil or openbook, or the various braille
translation programs going to do with the results. Do they do Nemeth Braille?

These are tough questions. But, I think bookshare is going to have to come up
with a workable solution if it is going to translate anything but English
text-oriented material for the school children it proposes to serve in the near
future.

Once such a book were scanned properly, who among us would validate the various
formulae and equations in the book for accuracy. In a time and land far far
away, I made a pluses in statistics, so could possibly do a credible job on a
statistics manual, but wouldn't even want to attempt a book on physics, and
can't even imagine validating a book on chemistry.

How is someone going to place square root signs, integral signs, etc into an
.rtf book? Is there a way to hit some keys and put those symbols in? Actually
what's needed is for the Finereader software to recognize those symbols and put
them into the .rtf file. Without Finereader cooperating, it would take many
hours to put all those symbols in by hand...

Or am I not understanding something?

  Thanks, Carrie

But whoever gets it can get a reader for the equations, place them in the
book, and perhaps, hopefully, submit a BSO.

I have already bought, chopped, scanned and OCRed Elements of Statistical
Reasoning, but I haven't pre-validated it yet. Will have it in the collection
within a week, but I'm not sure how much use it'll be, since there's no way
(that I know of) to represent all the equations in it.

I'm forwarding this from Jamie. When I added the books
to the nonfiction section, I noticed that Elements of
statistical reasoning, by Edward W. Minium, Robert C.
Clarke, and Theodore Coladarci 1999 edition, needed
for an upcoming class, is still on the Wish List.

    Actually, I think it's a 1998 edition, according to
    Amazon.

    Carrie, can it be had?

    G. Cindy
