Since late 1950s, all soviet engines were designed with optimized nozzle contours, using metod based on optimization of target function using calculus of variations. Basically, this method is still used. In attachment you can find the recent paper with description of "modernized" method developed in 1950s (sorry, in Russian only). By the way, one of the authors of this paper (namely Sternin) was one of the author of the original nozzle optimization method developed back in USSR.
