What is more intriguing is that he's gone to crowd funding for 32K to
build a second version instead of
hitting up NASA or the likes for the funding.

This is a great example showing why the entry barrier for private
investment should be kept high.
What is more likely, they have decided they don't want NASA funding through
SBIR grants, or they have been applying and keep getting rejected? :)
