One thing you have to know before you buy a microwave or other device with a
touch panel is whether the panel REQUIRES pressure to trip any control or
whether a control will trip if your finger is within a couple of thousandths of
an inch. Put another way, does the appliance have pressure-sensitive controls
or something we might call "proximity controls" which trip if your finger is
quite close. The reason this parameter is critical is that on some touch
panels (of which I have seen one) would trip if you move your finger along
reading the braille labels to find the desired control. You wouldn't be able
to use braille labels on such a unit. One way by which you might get an idea
about the panel of the appliance you plan to buy, if a demo unit is powered up,
is to have someone carefully hold a strip of labeling tape against the display
as you feel along the tape. If you activate switches as you feel along, you
will probably have a problem with that unit.

I wonder if the optacon could be used on an appliance like a microwave. The
person could at least locate the controls and then more their fingers where
they want to touch the screen. I never used a lens to read a computer with an
optacon because there weren't any computers when I used the optacon. I guess I
am really dating myself.

We just moved to Washington recentby, and they have been doing mail-in,
apparently, also for years.
I still prefer to go in and use the machine, but I am so thankful to be one who
uses the optacon.
After last night's call, I was thanking Jesus for allowing me to be part of the
generation who had access to the Optacon, and thanking my hubby for introducing
me to it in 1979.
