I heard about a somewhat unusual spatial-management problem for one blind
person years ago, though I don't know anything about cause of blindness or
whether the person was born prematurely. The student wanted to learn to
play the organ, and the teacher thought he would be good at it; but he could
not manage the spatial relationships required for playing the pedals. I
have been playing pipe organs for years, and I know that there is a knack
for playing with hands and feet together. Of course, spatial perception is
a fundamental requirement for accurate playing on the pedalboard.

I was born two months premature, one of quads. I consider
myself very lucky, as although I was born early and at a light weight of
three pounds, I have not suffered some of the problems
associated with retinopathy of prematurity. I simply am blind.
I have good spatial awareness, good co-ordination skills and good mobility
skills.
