Gayle Brugler. Dragon Lady. She was  the supervisor of
training when I took mine in July 1974. It is to be hoped
she did not hold that position long enough to impact too
many students negativelly.

You had nice instructors, Carolyn. For my part, I was
criticized 
because I refused to work all nght after spending all day
on it. My 
individual
trainer knew I was working at   it and she was impressed
by
my intuitive
talent  on it. Her supervisor objected because my "study
habits" were 
unconventional and I read brialle with one hand, which
"made it 
slower."
The supervisor took it upon herself to telephone my mother
at the 
motel after hours and read her the riot act and demand to
know why I  
wasn't "studying." My mother informed her I was tired and
needed rest 
and said good bye.


Strictly by chance, the next day my trainer mentioned to
the 
supervisor I was the brightest and most sensitive student
she'd ever 
taught. She'd never seen anyone pick up the Optacon that
fast and 
intuitively with little prompting from her.  I went on to
finish my 
college degree with honors and used the Optacon in two
languages. I 
used it for 15 years in the CRT mode on computer screens.
I still use 
it today for everything it can do. And I still read
braille with one 
hand ... both in hard copy and on a refreshable braille
display.


For the weekend entertainment while in Palo Alto, we drove
up to 
Redwood Canyon and Muir Woods. Hard to beat!

I was there in July of 1973.  Hard, fulfilling work.

Hello Ben.

Many years ago, it was advised that you should not use
an Optacon
unless you had been trained by an expert.   Our public
library in
Manchester didn't realise this and they bought four
Optacons
back
in the 1980's for customers to use.   I was the only
Optacon
user
and when it was suggested that people could teach
themselves
it
was frowned upon by the Optacon teachers who I knew.
Apart
from
the two instructors who taught me in London, I knew a
local
lady
here in Stockport who also trained to be an instructor.
I
think
the Optacons at the library were hardly ever used.
They
had two
Kurzweil machines at the library, and I also used those
regularly.

Have you previously used an Optacon?   If not, it would
be
interesting to see how you go on.

I was trained to use an Optacon in 1982, and it is still
something 
which I use every day.
