Hello Judy. I also recall meeting with Doug in about 1983-1984 when he was
demonstrating Vert to some of the Manitoba Department Of Education. I still
have the cassette of that demo. Doug did a witty and informative
presentation. In 1991 I took a year off, and when I visited with him, he
showed me scanning and OCR technology, and he made us a dinner of chili and
cheese. Nice and filling. Personally, I think Doug and his business in
Winnipeg were victims of CNIB and other departments' politics and their
agenda. He rightfully always spoke up for the betterment of all and was
never a push-over, and "the powers that be" don't seem to like reality
checks given to them. This is just one reason why I handed in my
credentials concerning the Ontario Ministry Of Health in 2011.
The two people who were in Ottawa ostensively took upon themselves fund
rasing and web design and such for the optacon III project, but as it turned
out they were working for themselves and setting themselves up using others'
ample and generous resources. This was the multifaceted distraction which
stil hinders things even after the fact. It takes but a moment to destroy a
building, and perhaps years to build it. They also tried to get their hands
on other cutting-edge technology developed here: alternative energy stuff,
anti-gravity stuff, completely portable MRI-like stuff which actually work
better and reveal more than the standard MRI and FMRI, full-page interactive
tactile technology, some advanced trans-cranial magnetic stimulation
technology, and so forth. The sum of the matter as far as it pertains to an
optacon III is that all of the needed infrastructure and paperwork to move a
successful prototype from the bench, through the process of development and
into the market, were never even started, albeit I found out about this
after the fact. As for marketing skills, I myself have less than none of
these, and what I can contribute is least effective in the administration of
things (albeit I do have experience in hospital admin as in working with
them to streamline systems), and would be more effective at the bench level.

Judy, I am replying to the list on purpose.
As you might have seen from the list, Chuck and I know each other a
little. We met in 1991 when I was starting my Business called E.Y.E.S.
(Entering Your Ear systems.) At the time, he was most interested in
less expensive Braille devices and I believe some type of less expensive
display for the optacon.
There's an expression my mother used on occasion, "once burned, twice
shy." I believe some of us, if trusted, could help perhaps through a
well designed and controlled "Go Fund Me" campaign.
I think a bigger problem with all the cop-out and escape routes
available to a too stagnant blind and visually impaired population would
be to convince them of the total value and flexibility of the Optacon
but the intended newer model has wider possibilities built on today's
technology.

Hi To All,
While I applaud Charles' knowledge and others with the engineering talents
I
certainly don't have, are there others on the list with marketing talents
and contacts? The reason I am asking is because we have been Talking
about
this new optacon, which is good, but is there any forward momentum to the
talk? Just curious.
