I'd love an interface to display the computer output through the optacon. It
would be great for when something in Windows hangs and you need to do things in
safe mode or from the BIOS.

Following this with interest as it might make for a simple application for a
new tactile display. But as you point out, why add a relatively expensive
optacon display to a system with a good screen reader already? Would it be
worth it?

Mousepad/touchpad is a good suggestion as an alternative for a mouse!

BTW, I put up videos of working actuators on the blog today:

and will publish several actuator designs too in the next few days.

I just want to stress again that while we are waiting for a much
improved optacon, NVDA has much more ability to read what is under the
mouse pointer. You can move the pointer all over the screen, and NVDA
will read every word that pointer is on and you can click with the
actual mouse just like a sighted person. JAWS does not allow us to
use the mouse like that at all. It does not matter if the software is
compatible or not like with JAWS. NVDA just reads everything on the
screen. There is a key command where you can move the mouse pointer
to where you are reading and then click with the mouse. There is a
brand new version that just came out a couple of months ago. It is
much better, and all access keys for the Internet are also there.

Hi, I have definitely noticed that the mouse pad is much easier to
manipulate than the regular mouse that lays on the desk beside a
desktop. I have a laptop at home, and I can use NVDA to move the
mouse right to where I want the pointer to be on the screen. As I
move my finger across the mouse pad on my laptop, NVDA will say where
the mouse pointer is and I can click just like a sighted person. NVDA
is a screen reader almost as good as JAWS that can be downloaded free.
There is a portable version that you can save on a USB drive that
doesn't need to be installed onto the computer. It runs right from
the USB drive. When I am at a friend's house, I just whip out my
drive from my pocket and fire up NVDA from the USB drive on their
computer. This allows me to use any computer, and use the mouse pad
like a sighted person and NVDA will tell me where the pointer is
almost as well as JAWS tells you where the JAWS cursor is reading and
even the PC cursor. You might want to try using NVDA at work, because
you might be able to use the mouse and have NVDA read everything you
are pointing to with the mouse. JAWS will not do that. If you are
interested in downloading a version of NVDA onto a flash drive, I will
post the link from where you can download it from. You can just take
your flash drive to work and insert it and use JAWS to find NVDA on
the flash drive and then fire up NVDA and then turn off JAWS. I
really think you then could use the mouse and NVDA would tell you what
the pointer is on and read it to you. Remember, NVDA is totally free
and requires no installation on any computer!!! Now, when the optacon
can follow the mouse pointer, this will bring in an entire new world
for the blind. I can't wait until I can sit down at my sighted
friends' computers and whip out the optican and use their computer
with the mouse just like they do. I am 49 years old, so I hope it
happens in the next ten years so I am healthy enough to dance for an
hour and celebrate all night lol!!!!!

I've accomplished similar functions with a CRT lens and Optacon. I can
even pick up on the mouse pointer, although to use the mouse is another
question entirely. Were any of you aware that a mouse pad on a laptop
is more easily accessed than the hand-held mouse on a regular desktop
PC? I use HAWS 16 on a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and can manipulate the
mouse pad and get results on a Focus 40 Blue. A recent skill I've
learned.

my

happening. Hooray!
If there were a way to coordinate the Optacon with a mouse, as we've

For
me, it could mean the difference between continued employment and early
retirement. It may not come to that, but it's a definite possibility.

And then there are those screens that Jaws reads just fine, but the
developer left out all keyboard access, and the only way to execute a
link
is to click with a mouse. Grrr.
