Peter,
It turns out that hand writing recognition systems are starting to 
work pretty well, with much better accuracy and speed then most of us 
were expecting.
For example, many Colorado counties are having good success with 
scanning systems that recognize voter signatures on Vote-By-Mail 
ballot envelopes.
Like speech recognition and recognition of printed text, hand writing 
recognition is responding well to the application of artificial 
intelligence and deep learning algorithms.
I don't happen to know what free smart phone scanning apps are 
currently available for hand writing recognition or HWR, but it is 
safe to bet that they are coming soon.
However, just as with the possibility of someone being able to maybe 
make a MEMS tactile display for an Optacon III, I do not plan to get 
rid of my good old Optacons any time soon.
