Hello Evan,
I've been an Optacon user since 1977 and, being a geography lover and a
map junkie, I do use my Optacon to look at maps.
It isn't the easiest of tasks, because maps are usually complex, and
have a number of different colours as well. But it can be done, once you
learn how to interpret the different details.
Usually the map legend helps you to start deciphering the meaning of the
various symbols nad signs used on the map itself.
Some are conventional, therefore standard, but there might be symbols
specific to a given map or plan.
another issue might be the character dimensions. Some are really small,
and even the maximus size you can obtain with the Optacon zoom isn't
quite enough.
For such occasions I have another camera, zhich is fixed and has no
zoom, that enlarges characters 1-1/4 times more than the maximum
obtained with the regular zoom.
I don't know whether it's still possible to find one of those somewhere.
My mother bought it to me as a Birthday rpesent around 1980, and I'm
really grateful to her for it.
hth, ciao,
Ollie

Hey Guys,to view the list archives, go to:
I have a few braille maps, but theyâre very expensive, and the selection is
pretty limited. I like maps quite a bit, and Iâd like to get some print
ones if I can read them with an Optacon. Iâm pretty sure theyâd be much
cheaper, and I would have a much wider selection.
Iâd like to try looking at a couple of state maps, the one I live in now,
and the one I grew up in to start with, where the towns are basically, and
Iâd like to see if I can read a United States map, and perhaps a world
atlas.
Have any of you looked at any print maps? Can you make out the shapes of the
states, say, in a U.
S. map, or see where the towns are on a state map? Are the print names easy
to read? I imagine they may not all be oriented the same way, but I can deal
with that. They might be very small print though, which is one of those
things Iâd like to know about.
If any of you have looked at any, are there ones you think are particularly
easy to read with an Optacon? Any you would avoid?
Thanks very much for any feedback.
Evan
