As long as the Directory is not lost there are ways, I believe, of retrieving 'lost' files; but if the Directory is lost or damaged I believe it is virtually impossible to retrieve them!! I knew a man once who really knew how to dig into these things at the machine code level - he was a Mac wizard!!! Doesn't help you though unless you know another such wizard!!!
