A book collector explained to me that those numbers indicate the edition. If a book has all ten numbers, it is a first edition. It doesn't matter if they are consecutive or, as you'll sometimes see, the odd numbers are on one side and the even on the other. If the numbers start with, say, 2 or 3, it is the third time the book has been published ot reprinted. I think they are a fairly recent thing. I haven't seen them in old books. The collector told me that those numbers ae more truly indicative of first editions, because sometime the publisher forgets to remove the words First Edition when a book is re-published.
