I've done that in the past except for grayscale. My grayscale results don't equal my static results by something .3. I know about saving the time on Optimization, and that's making me reconsider. I don't know what effects 400dpi would add into the mix. I'll take a look at them both together.

One very effective way in Kurzweil to scan very quickly while still
maintaining all the recognition features that may yield highest quality
text is to use a 2 step approach:

1. In settings / scanning, select 'image scanning only' as mode; I
also use grayscale and 400DPI because they tend to generate highest
quality scans in most cases.

2. Once you have scanned the whole book, change the 'mode' setting to
'recognize image files". Now go take a long walk or go to sleep. the
reco job may take 20 minutes. . . or run overnight, depending on the speed
of your machine.

The beauty of this process is that you will be able to scan the book at
full speed, without being bogged down by the slowdown introduced by the
recognition process, no matter how taxing the reco settings are.

I have them kept, as it slows down the scanning dramatically. I had to
shut
them off way back when i started to install, and so i keep them and remove

the junk myself.

I'll try the cleaning. Btw, and last question, how do you handle
suspicious
regions?
Thanks.

Two page mode, as the book fit on the scanner better that way.

You might want to clean the scanner glass and see if it makes a
difference.

Smile.

Or else try 400 dpi as I have done that on occassion, though it slows
things
down dramatically.

The font is a little different.

I don't know. I never read your copy. The library finally came up with
the
copy I had ordered for myself, 4 months back. I scanned it on a whim.
Your
copy is, I assume, as good as it ever was. Did you use 2-page mode or
single?
Thanks.

Hi Gary,

Interesting, as I emphasized smile, the fact that it needed eting when
I
put
it up.

By the by,

the seetings were

Grayscale, 300 dpi, and Fine Reader 8 as part of Bookshare.

So.... I have to wonder, what happened to the book from my desk to
Bookshare, as most of what I glanced at read great.

Would whoever scanned If Democrats tell me what software and settings
they
used? I just took a look at this book for curiosity's sake and found
it
a
horrible scan never exceeding 99.6 and much often lower. After I went
through the book with rank spelling, I still had 455 errors.
Much appreciated, Thanks.
