If they are really not copyrighted you can do pretty much anything you want to with them. There is such a thing as common law copyright, though, and that should be taken into consideration when contemplating doing anything you want with them. Common law copyright automatically gives certain protections to anything someone might write without having to register it anywhere. That means that private letters fall under common law copyright. However, I would expect that the exemption in the copyright law would apply just as much to common law copyright. We are expected to include a copyright page though. If there is none I suppose you would have to consult with Bookshare staff on how to handle that.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Question on cookbooks

Are there any exemptions for "public domain"/fundraiser non copyrighted cookbooks going into bookshare? Someone gave me a box of cookbooks and maybe a third of them are non copyrighted but wonderfully formatted for scanning. I fear they are not eligible, but would love to help them find their way into the collection.

Thanks!
