Interesting; my 3 asterisks without spaces do not turn the first one to a bullet (I have an old Word ( 1983-2001) but putting the chapter title into 16 Bold does create a black square; hopefully command Z will eliminate that; now what I have to do is to go to the heading file and then click on Clear Formatting, which clears chapter title as well as the black square, and then re-format the title. I'll try marilyn's suggestion and hope it works for me as wwell; thanks to both of you.
