Well, "nearly ideal" except for air drag, debris punctures, shadowing, obstruction of star trackers and sensors, flexibility effects on attitude control, etc. Launchers and stages are primarily propulsion devices and can accept sacrifices to be better at it; RCS/OMS systems are constrained not to interfere too much with other spacecraft subsystems.
