Hi, Listers,
Hi, Listers,
Inquiries are still coming in from our most recent hand-out posting.
Almost every correspondent at this time has at least one broken Optacon. I
am so pleased that we can help with this.
Most of the respondents have taken our survey as well and plan to join our
list. Don, let us know when we reach 170 members.
One of our respondents is quite a power Optacon user. He is able to
program his VCR and he figured out a way to use the VCR to capture those
annoying phone numbers on the bottom of TV screens during some TV
programs. To all who recently joined the list, welcome.
If anyone has a scanner and software they no longer want, one of our
respondents might be interested if the price is low.
Richard Oehm says to tell listers that he is back on eail but very behind.
He will respond to all repair inquiries as soon as he can.
OOur technical group has not been idle. They have been gathering all the
technical and fabrication information to do with the Optacon so that
everyone who needs it has access to it and that the material is all
assembled in one place. Apparently while working together they have
already come up with a possible way to refabricate the repeater cable.
There was something about connectors that had been a problem. Bravo, you
Optacon wizards. Keep up the good work.
If anyone has an engineering background and might like to join the
technichal group, please write to me off-list.
In the not too distant future, other committees drawing on other talents
of list members will become appropriate. Included among the things we
would need are those who enjoy working on fund-raising, those who have a
knowledge of or serious interest in Optacon training, those who like
marketing and advertising to try to reach potential users of a new device.
Currently, I could use a person or two to help me with the archives in
cataloging various messages. I would like to create more tip sheets such
as those we already have on signing documents with the Optacon and using a
scanner with the help of the Optacon. Topics for new sheets might include
tips on reading hand-writing, reading cans, bottles and jars, using the
Optacon to read foreign languages, and topics like that. If anyone is
interested in any of this, please write to me off-list and I'll get you
together with those having similar interests. If anybody wants to work on
the archives, let me know off-list and I'll put you to work.
We are of course continuing to look for unused and non-working Optacons,
including any dead batteries from the Optacon II. Please contact any of
the repairers with anything like this.
On a personal not, I just used the Optacon to discover that the local
grocery store had not given me the cat food I asked for. Since the cat is
currently sick, this is very important. This simple thing is a case where
a single use of the Optacon could make a significant difference. Never
mind speed or additional features.
We are also adding a high-tech aspect to our outreach. Thanks to Mary
Emerson and her helpers, we have Optacon podcasts and I think, a video.
Mary can update us on all that.
Well, that's it for now. Keep those cards and letters coming.
Catherine
