Hi -
I spent much of the day birding around Newport. Calm and sunny/partly cloudy
all day: much better than forecast.
Highlights: At Yaquina Head late morning: about 5000 loons southbound, mainly
Pacific in an hour. Also 50+
Bonaparte's Gulls, 50+ Mew Gulls, 20+ Herring Gulls. On water 4 Marbled
Murrelets, 1 Pigeon Guillemots, 12 Horned Grebes, 5 Red-necked Grebes.
Also 4 Gray Whales and 3 Steller's Sea Lions.
At Intl Terminal 200 Pine Siskins in Teasel until Merlin flew over, when most
left.
At N. end of Ferry Slip Road, same 2 Long-tailed Ducks as yesterday, several
Goldeneyes, incl. 1 female Barrow's, pair of Hooded Mergansers.
At HMSC Nature Trail several hundred N.Pintails, and American Wigeon, 2
Marbled Godwits.
