This shouldn't be necessary, Time Machine will do what it needs to reasonably 
opportunistically.

Switching them at the computer end will still have the same cable connected to 
the same drive, which will identify a problem with the USB port in the 
computer, but not the cable. Switch them at the hard drive end too.
