- Don't remember being asked about paying dues ...seems to me the last time this was brought up most everyone was against it and it was decided to ask members to contribute voluntarily to help defray costs...I even did make a contribution or two but don't remember anyone asking for more so I figured we must be doing ok. Of course the one or two things that I use the SLAGA website for are in the paying area. that would figure I still do not see a need for dues or for a more "professional" organization....the group knows how to have fun and the picnics, group get togethers etc have been well attended and there has been no lack of food...entertainment or even in most cases donated door prizes. If more money was needed to cover certain costs why was the membership not asked for donations. When things get to the point where a need for organization and money come about the groups usually stop being fun and then are more work than necessary. I already see that in the wording for the dues structure...very professional and very legalistic...I have a passionate dislike of lawyers and legalease...Pretty soon the meetings will be very stilted and using "parlimentery procedures" and everything will have to be done just so.....that is when the get togethers stop being fun and start being things to be avoided. I have been a member of SLAGA almost since the beginning and I have some very good friends there and have had some great times at all the events and I would hate to see it spoiled through the use of too much beauracracy. I will stay a member of SLAGA but most likely in the non paying sector and will put up with the loss of the things that I used the SLAGA page for....I don't feel a need to pay dues so that I can be put in a drawing for prizes that the dues will be paying for...if you have need of money to defray the costs of something ....ask and if I have it I will make a donation. I have a feeling that most of the membership will stay in the "non paying" class which will then force those making this decision to move the SLAGA into a all members must pay dues club and that will not be a good thing. Sorry for venting but just giving my 2 cents worth....as you can tell I do not like formal dues paying clubs as they tend to start doing other things I don't particularly care for. I expect the elected officers to step in when necessary to help explain it. An email blast to the general membership will be sent out shortly. Our plan is to put the membership types into effect starting January 1, 2006. We have done research by contacting other geocaching organizations on how they run their membership. Mid-Tennessee asks for $5 a year and their members get no benefits at all. They pay the dues because they want to help their group move forward and maintain their presence on the web and in the community. We decided after reviewing the money going in and out of the treasury the past few years and taking into account the things we want to accomplish in the group (both for our membership and for the general public), we would try a PAYING / NON-PAYING dues structure. STANDARD MEMBERSHIP (NO DUES) If you are an existing SLAGA member and you continue to fit the eligibility rules defined in the SLAGA bylaws (see Article II - Membership at http://tinyurl.com/ab9ov), you automatically have a Standard Membership. No dues required. Not much changes for you. You still geocaching and attend SLAGA events as you always have. We won't, however, track your stats on the web site anymore. That's all you lose. This was against my better judgement, however, stats are a novelty and I can drop that web page completely at my own discretion. CONTRIBUTING MEMBERSHIP (ANNUAL DUES) A Contributing Membership is one that pays dues and will receive additional benefits. See "Dues / Benefits" at http://tinyurl.com/8q7nl for due amounts and membership benefits. No matter how delicately we try to explain this, there will be misunderstandings and hurt feelings. I know its an easy expression to use, but "You can't please everyone." Paul Konopacki SLAGA President 2005-2006 **************************************** Our WebPage!
