My Mom collected postcards for her whole life (76 years).
When she died, she had (we estimate) 100,000 or so cards.
She had two full size file cabinets (the ones that used to
hold computer cards) full and estimating (using my old card
ruler) 4000 per drawer * 20 drawers (packed full) along with
multiple shoeboxes. We tried to get them appraised and no
one would give us more than a couple of thousand dollars for
the whole colletion. We figured (my siblings and I) that
we'd rather have them in the attic than to give them away.
They were aged anywhere from late 1800's through her death
in 2002. She had collected them from all her relatives, any
flea market, and had "pen pals" all over the world that sent
her cards. Many were never circulated.

That link brings back memories. Thanks.
