I have to repeat what someone I think already mentioned. There are some packages out there that will tell you that they detected spyware on your machine, and offer to remove it for you. What really happens is that it installs its own maleware and it hasn't really found anything. The extort some money from you for the service which they really didn't perform and walk away with your money. Sorta like the "shark control under the Eads bridge" scam. Try to prove it DIDN'T remove the spyware. It isn't there now! So be careful and only install something you KNOW is reputable and recommended by those who know about such things. I add my recommendation for Ad-aware.

General consensus of opinion seems to be no one anti-spyware package catches
all the nasties. In fact, experts suggest anti-spyware s/w is not nearly as
sophisticated as antivirus stuff at this point......primarily because the
vendors just haven't devoted as many resources to fighting spyware as they
have antivirus. And the spyware creators are spawning new crap at a far
greater clip than vendors are updating the packages they do have available.

Ad-Aware supposedly does a reasonable job.....as does Spybot. But a couple
recent sources have been touting Sunbelt Software's 'CounterSpy' as the best
of breed.....though even it doesn't catch all the buggers.

As someone who does this for a living, I recommend only two
products: Ad-Aware (Lavasoft), and Spybot Search& Destroy
(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/).

There are a number of "antispyware" products being SOLD out
there right now which are themselves both spyware and trojans
- so be VERY careful what you use!
