Jeff,

And when you're the captain?

GPS use is allowed on United at the Captain's discretion (except during
takeoff and landing).

Only on American, that I know of, is it listed as a prohibited electronic
item. I think that Continental and SW are OK with it. Not sure about Delta or
United.

Interesting enough, 1 week prior to my introduction to geocaching, I was on
a flightr from SF to Houston (with a free upgrade to 1st class) when I was
exposed to my first GPSr. The gentleman sitting next to me was verifying
altitude and speed as stated by the pilot. The flight attendants were also
interested, but from a curiousity stance, not one of security, or potential
inteference to electronics. On subsequent trips I have hooked up my laptop and
openly operated my GPSr while showing progress to other passengers and flight
attendants w/o any negative responses. It's been a while since I looked at the
pages of inflight magazines to verify, but in the past GPSrs were not listed a
prohibbited, though this may have been prior to recent popularity.

I usually follow the prohibited list while on board a plane... However,
there was this one time and it was very cool. Not too sure if they would
appreciate it if they caught me though. They are strictly prohibited while
    in flight..
